Identification Handbooks,

by Larry Goldberg

This series has won 30 philatelic literature awards

Larry has published what was intended to be an extended series - a list of the volumes available is below. We will take the Kenya volume as an example for review.

It is not that the topics have not been covered before. The East Africa Study Circle and Ted Proud have produced comprehensive volumes for both territories. However, for example, Ted’s listing of Kenya postmarks covers 263 illustrated pages and (in this case) does not have an index of post offices at the back of the book. So if you have a partial cancel, odds are that you will have a lot of work to do unless you know what it is already!

Larry lists all possible two-letter combinations and three-letter combinations: the first two, three and four characters; the middle two and three characters; and the last two, three and four characters. Fans of ‘The Sound of Music’ will be pleased to know that the second page of the ‘first two characters of cancel’ section is headed ‘LA to SO’!

There is also a full listing of cancels by Post Office; plus some background information and notes on using the book. There are some, good quality illustrations.

This book is a must for postal historians, collectors and dealers alike. In particular I cannot imagine a postal history dealer being without it! In many cases this book will reduce the time taken to identify a partial cancel from minutes, often many minutes, to seconds. Highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in cancellations or Postal History.
